Fatboy Slim, alias de Norman Cook, est un musicien, producteur et DJ britannique né en 1963, figure centrale de la scène électronique de Brighton. Pionnier du big beat dans les années 1990, il s’est fait connaître par un usage intensif du sample mêlé à des structures pop et à des breakbeats percutants. Son parcours, de bassiste des Housemartins à DJ planétaire, a marqué durablement la musique électronique britannique.
Né Quentin Leo Cook le 31 juillet 1963 à Reigate, dans le Surrey, Norman Cook rejoint en 1985 le groupe pop indépendant The Housemartins comme bassiste, avec lequel il connaît un numéro un au Royaume-Uni grâce à la reprise « Caravan of Love » en 1986. Après la séparation du groupe en 1988, il s’installe à Brighton et se consacre à la musique électronique, fondant le projet Beats International, auteur du single « Dub Be Good to Me », numéro un britannique en 1990. Il enregistre également sous divers pseudonymes, dont Pizzaman et Mighty Dub Katz, avant d’adopter en 1995 le nom de Fatboy Slim pour le single « Santa Cruz », publié sur le label brightonnois Skint Records. Fatboy Slim cofonde à la même période la soirée Big Beat Boutique, dont le nom donnera naissance au genre big beat.
Le style de Fatboy Slim repose sur un art du collage sonore : samples de soul, de funk, de hip-hop et de rock assemblés à des breakbeats et des structures empruntées à la pop, pour un résultat à la fois festif et accessible. Considéré comme l’un des architectes du big beat aux côtés des Chemical Brothers, il privilégie des riffs de guitare massifs, des rythmiques syncopées et des voix samplées utilisées comme des slogans. Son approche, fondée sur le détournement de sources anciennes plutôt que sur des tubes reconnaissables, a contribué à populariser une musique électronique pensée pour un public large, du dancefloor au grand public radiophonique.
Après le premier album Better Living Through Chemistry en 1996, Fatboy Slim connaît la consécration internationale avec You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby en 1998, numéro un des ventes au Royaume-Uni et certifié quadruple platine, porté par les singles « The Rockafeller Skank », « Praise You » et « Right Here, Right Now » ; l’album lui vaut un Brit Award en 1999. Ses remixes de « Brimful of Asha » de Cornershop et « Renegade Master » de Wildchild atteignent respectivement la première et la troisième place des charts britanniques en 1998. En 2000 paraît Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars, avec les collaborations « Demons » aux côtés de Macy Gray et « Weapon of Choice » avec Bootsy Collins, dont le clip signé Spike Jonze et interprété par Christopher Walken remporte six MTV Video Music Awards. En 2001 puis 2002, ses concerts gratuits Big Beach Boutique sur la plage de Brighton rassemblent des dizaines de milliers de spectateurs, confirmant son statut de DJ le plus demandé au monde.

Born Quentin Leo Cook on 31 July 1963 in Reigate, Surrey, Norman Cook joined the indie pop band the Housemartins as bassist in 1985, scoring a UK number-one hit with the cover « Caravan of Love » in 1986. After the band split in 1988, he moved to Brighton to focus on electronic music, forming Beats International, whose single « Dub Be Good to Me » reached number one in the UK in 1990.
