Die Antwoord is a South African rap-rave duo from Cape Town, formed in 2008 by rappers Ninja and Yolandi Visser, initially alongside producer DJ Hi-Tek. Rooted in the zef scene, an Afrikaner counterculture built on a deliberately brash, working-class aesthetic, they forged a hybrid sound and visual identity blending hip-hop, rave and self-consciously kitsch imagery. Their name, meaning « the answer » in Afrikaans, reflects an approach that quickly reached far beyond South Africa, largely through music videos that went viral starting in 2010.
Ninja, born Watkin Tudor Jones on 26 September 1974, had previously fronted the band Max Normal and the satirical project MaxNormal.TV. Yolandi Visser, born Anri du Toit on 1 December 1984 in Port Alfred, came from the group The Constructus Corporation and had also been part of MaxNormal.TV. The pair met in Cape Town and founded Die Antwoord in 2008 with DJ Hi-Tek (Justin de Nobrega, later credited as God) on production. Their debut album, O, was self-released in 2009 before being picked up by Interscope in 2010. The group later left the label, unwilling to soften their style, and set up their own imprint, Zef Recordz, which released their subsequent albums.
Die Antwoord’s sound fuses hip-hop with rave music, with lyrics moving between English and Afrikaans, carried by Ninja’s clipped delivery and Yolandi Visser’s high-pitched, theatrical voice. Production, initially handled by DJ Hi-Tek and later expanded to collaborators such as DJ Muggs and Black Goat, combines aggressive electronic rhythms, samples and a raw digital aesthetic. The group’s visual identity, marked by crude imagery and unapologetic theatricality, owes much to collaborations with artists such as photographer Roger Ballen.
Following O, the group released Ten$ion in 2012, then Donker Mag in 2014, driven by the singles « Cookie Thumper! » and « Pitbull Terrier, » which topped the Billboard Dance chart and reached number 37 on the Billboard 200 in the United States. The mixtape Suck on This followed in 2016, along with the album Mount Ninji and da Nice Time Kid, before House of Zef appeared in 2020. The video for « Enter the Ninja » had earlier brought the group worldwide attention in 2010. Die Antwoord also branched into film, notably appearing in Neill Blomkamp’s Chappie in 2015. The group has additionally been at the center of several documented controversies, including accusations of cultural appropriation and homophobia.
