Gorillaz est un groupe virtuel britannique fondé en 1998 par le musicien Damon Albarn, également chanteur de Blur, et le dessinateur Jamie Hewlett, cocréateur de la bande dessinée Tank Girl. Porté par quatre personnages animés — 2-D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle et Russel Hobbs —, le projet mêle hip-hop, électronique, rock alternatif et musiques du monde. Pionnier du groupe virtuel à grande échelle, Gorillaz a profondément renouvelé les frontières entre musique et animation.
Damon Albarn et Jamie Hewlett se rencontrent en 1990 par l’entremise du guitariste de Blur, Graham Coxon, avant de partager un appartement londonien en 1997. C’est en observant les programmes de MTV qu’ils conçoivent l’idée d’un groupe entièrement animé, conçu comme un commentaire ironique sur la culture des clips. Le projet Gorillaz voit le jour en 1998 ; un premier EP paraît en 2000, suivi en 2001 de l’album éponyme, porté par le single « Clint Eastwood » et coproduit avec Dan the Automator. Le groupe est distingué en 2001 par le Guinness World Records comme « groupe virtuel le plus vendu de l’histoire ». Albarn demeure le seul contributeur musical permanent du projet, entouré à chaque album de collaborateurs et producteurs renouvelés, parmi lesquels Danger Mouse à partir de 2005.
Le style de Gorillaz se caractérise par une hybridation constante des genres : hip-hop, trip-hop, électronique, rock alternatif, dub et pop se croisent au fil des albums, portés par la voix de 2-D interprétée par Damon Albarn. Chaque disque s’appuie sur un vaste réseau de featurings, de De La Soul à Danger Mouse, qui enrichissent la palette sonore du groupe sans jamais en dénaturer l’identité. L’album éponyme Gorillaz paraît en 2001 et se hisse triple platine au Royaume-Uni. Demon Days suit en 2005, certifié cinq fois platine au Royaume-Uni et double platine aux États-Unis ; le single « Feel Good Inc. » vaut au groupe son unique Grammy Award, celui de la meilleure collaboration pop avec voix, en 2006. Plastic Beach paraît en 2010, suivi du live The Fall en 2011. Après Humanz (2017) et The Now Now (2018), le groupe publie Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez en 2020, puis Cracker Island en 2023 et The Mountain en 2026. Gorillaz a également remporté deux MTV Video Music Awards, un NME Award, quatre MTV Europe Music Awards et le Brit Award du meilleur groupe britannique en 2018, après onze nominations.
