Ed Simons (né le 9 juin 1970 à Londres) et Tom Rowlands (né le 11 janvier 1971 dans l’Oxfordshire) se rencontrent en 1989 à l’université de Manchester, où ils étudient l’histoire. Passionnés de rave et de clubbing, ils commencent à mixer ensemble sous le nom des « 237 Turbo Nutters », puis des Dust Brothers, en référence au duo américain du même nom. Ils fondent leur propre label, Diamond Records, et publient le morceau « Song to the Siren » en 1992. Après une contestation du duo américain original, ils adoptent en 1995 le nom The Chemical Brothers, tiré de leur titre « Chemical Beats ». La même année, leur premier album sous ce nom, Exit Planet Dust, connaît un succès immédiat et dépasse le million d’exemplaires vendus.
Le son de The Chemical Brothers repose sur des breakbeats puissants, des samples denses et des lignes de basse saturées, empruntant autant au hip-hop et à la techno qu’au rock psychédélique. Considérés comme des pionniers du big beat aux côtés de Fatboy Slim ou The Prodigy, Rowlands et Simons construisent des morceaux pensés pour le club comme pour la scène, avec une forte dimension visuelle en concert. Leurs influences revendiquées vont de Public Enemy à Kraftwerk, en passant par My Bloody Valentine et Cabaret Voltaire. Le duo multiplie les collaborations vocales, invitant notamment Noel Gallagher, Beth Orton, Bernard Sumner, Q-Tip, St. Vincent, Beck ou plus récemment Aurora.

Come with Us (2003), Push the Button (2005) et We Are the Night (2007) confirment leur statut, chacun atteignant également la première place. Le duo cumule treize singles dans le top 20 britannique et six Grammy Awards, dont celui du Best Rock Instrumental Performance pour « Block Rockin’ Beats » et celui du meilleur album dance/électronique pour No Geography (2018). Le dixième album studio de The Chemical Brothers, For That Beautiful Feeling, sort en septembre 2023, précédé des singles « No Reason », « Live Again » (avec Halo Maud) et « Skipping Like a Stone » (avec Beck) ; une biographie officielle, Paused in Cosmic Reflection, paraît la même année. En 2025, Tom Rowlands forme avec la chanteuse Aurora le projet Tomora.

Ed Simons (born 9 June 1970 in London) and Tom Rowlands (born 11 January 1971 in Oxfordshire) met in 1989 at the University of Manchester, where they studied history. Enthusiasts of raves and clubbing, they began DJing together under the alias « 237 Turbo Nutters, » then as the Dust Brothers, after the American duo of the same name. They launched their own label, Diamond Records, and released the track « Song to the Siren » in 1992. After the original American duo objected, they adopted the name The Chemical Brothers in 1995, taken from their track « Chemical Beats. » That same year, their first album under this name, Exit Planet Dust, was an immediate success, selling over a million copies.
The Chemical Brothers’s sound rests on powerful breakbeats, dense samples and distorted basslines, drawing on hip-hop and techno as much as psychedelic rock. Regarded as big beat pioneers alongside Fatboy Slim and The Prodigy, Rowlands and Simons craft tracks built for both the club and the stage, with a strong visual dimension in their live shows.
