Fatboy Slim – Weapon of Choice (2001)

En 2001, Fatboy Slim publie le clip de « Weapon of Choice », morceau extrait de son album Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars et porté par la voix du funkeur américain Bootsy Collins. Réalisé par Spike Jonze, déjà connu pour ses collaborations avec Björk et les Beastie Boys, le clip est tourné en décembre 2000 dans le lobby du Marriott Hotel de Los Angeles, un lieu vaste et feutré, presque vide, où l’attente immobile d’un premier plan bascule très vite dans le déploiement d’une énergie inattendue.

Cette envolée, rendue possible par un système de câbles puis recomposée numériquement, transforme le hall d’hôtel en une scène onirique où le décor réaliste se dissout progressivement sous l’effet de la danse. Le morceau de Fatboy Slim, avec ses samples funk et son groove hypnotique, trouve dans cette gestuelle une traduction physique directe : la liberté du corps répond à la scansion du titre, comme si la musique elle-même dictait cette libération soudaine face à l’immobilité et au conditionnement du costume, du lieu, du rôle social.
