The Prodigy est un groupe britannique de musique électronique formé à Braintree, dans l’Essex, en 1990, autour du producteur, claviériste et compositeur Liam Howlett. Porté à l’origine par les danseurs Keith Flint et Leeroy Thornhill ainsi que par le MC Maxim, The Prodigy s’est imposé comme l’un des groupes électroniques les plus influents et les plus vendus au monde.
The Prodigy naît le 5 octobre 1990 lorsque Liam Howlett, alors DJ dans la scène rave de l’Essex, s’associe aux danseurs Keith Flint et Leeroy Thornhill, rencontrés lors de soirées au club The Barn, puis au MC Maxim (Keith Palmer). Le nom du groupe est tiré du synthétiseur Moog Prodigy utilisé par Howlett pour ses premières productions. Signé sur le label indépendant XL Recordings, le groupe publie en 1991 son premier single, What Evil Lurks, suivi de titres comme Charly et Everybody in the Place, qui rencontrent un succès rapide dans le top 5 britannique. Leur premier album, Experience (1992), consacre leur ancrage dans le rave et le breakbeat hardcore, avant que Music for the Jilted Generation (1994) ne marque une évolution vers des sonorités techno plus travaillées, en réaction à la criminalisation des rave-parties par le gouvernement britannique.
Le style de The Prodigy, que Liam Howlett qualifie lui-même de « punk électronique », combine des rythmiques breakbeat percutantes, des basses saturées et des samples issus du hip-hop, de la techno et du rock. L’album The Fat of the Land (1997), porté par les singles Firestarter, Breathe et Smack My Bitch Up, propulse The Prodigy au rang de phénomène mondial : il se classe numéro un dans plus d’une vingtaine de pays, dont le Royaume-Uni et les États-Unis, faisant du groupe le premier acte électronique à atteindre la tête des charts américains. La même année, The Prodigy devient le premier groupe électronique à headliner le festival de Glastonbury. Le groupe poursuit sa carrière avec les albums Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned (2004), Invaders Must Die (2009), The Day Is My Enemy (2015) et No Tourists (2018).
