Blondie – Pollinator (2017)

Pollinator est le onzième album studio de Blondie, sorti le 5 mai 2017 chez BMG. Conçu comme un album de collaborations, il tire son titre du principe de « pollinisation » : Debbie Harry et Chris Stein y invitent une génération d’auteurs extérieurs — Sia, Johnny Marr, Charli XCX — à écrire pour le groupe. La pochette, signée par l’artiste visuel Shepard Fairey (Obey), reprend l’imagerie de l’abeille en écho au concept de l’album. Porté par des titres comme « Fun » et « Long Time », Pollinator marque un retour à un son plus rock après l’expérimentation électronique de l’album précédent, Ghosts of Download.

Plus de la moitié des morceaux ont été écrits par des artistes extérieurs au groupe : David Sitek (TV on the Radio), Johnny Marr, Sia, Nick Valensi (The Strokes), Charli XCX, Dev Hynes, ou encore le YouTubeur canadien Adam Johnston (An Unkindness). Cinq titres restent l’œuvre de membres de Blondie, dont deux co-écrits par Harry et Stein et deux autres par le claviériste Matt Katz-Bohen avec son épouse Laurel. Selon Chris Stein, cette démarche ne relevait pas d’un manque d’inspiration mais d’une volonté d’ouverture : « We thought to ask people because there’s so much good music swirling about ». Le tri des contributions a été effectué par le groupe et le producteur John Congleton. L’album a été annoncé le 23 janvier 2017, et sa pochette dévoilée le 30 janvier suivant. Il compte notamment les participations de Joan Jett (chœurs sur « Doom or Destiny ») et Johnny Marr (guitare).

Musicalement, Pollinator marie l’ADN new wave et power-pop du groupe à des sonorités contemporaines, sous la production de John Congleton (production additionnelle de Tony Hoffer sur plusieurs titres, mixage de Rich Costey). La voix de Debbie Harry, alors âgée de 71 ans, conserve une énergie que plusieurs critiques ont soulignée comme un contraste marquant avec les thèmes juvéniles abordés dans certains textes. Visuellement, Shepard Fairey déploie son esthétique graphique caractéristique — formes stylisées, palette contrastée — pour représenter une abeille, symbole choisi en écho au fil conducteur collaboratif de l’album ; ce motif a ensuite été repris par Harry sur scène, sous la forme d’un costume d’abeille porté lors de la tournée coheadline avec Garbage à l’été 2017.

L’album a reçu un accueil critique globalement favorable (71/100 sur Metacritic), la presse saluant la production de Congleton et l’interprétation de Harry tout en regrettant, pour certains, le faible nombre de titres écrits directement par Harry et Stein. Rolling Stone et The Guardian ont particulièrement loué l’énergie du disque, tandis que Pitchfork a mis en avant le morceau de clôture, « Fragments ». Sur le plan commercial, Pollinator a atteint la 4e place des charts britanniques — le meilleur classement du groupe au Royaume-Uni depuis 18 ans — et la 63e place du Billboard 200 aux États-Unis, leur meilleur résultat national depuis 1999. Le single « Fun » a atteint la première place du classement Billboard Dance Club Songs, une première pour le groupe depuis les remixes d’« Atomic » en 1995.

The album received generally favourable reviews (71/100 on Metacritic), with critics praising Congleton’s production and Harry’s delivery, while some lamented the small number of tracks written directly by Harry and Stein. Rolling Stone and The Guardian particularly praised the record’s energy, while Pitchfork highlighted the closing track, « Fragments. » Commercially, Pollinator peaked at No. 4 on the UK charts — the band’s best UK chart position in 18 years — and at No. 63 on the Billboard 200 in the US, their best domestic result since 1999. The single « Fun » reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Dance Club Songs chart, the band’s first chart-topper there since the 1995 « Atomic » remixes.
