The Chemical Brothers – Galvanize (2005)

The Chemical Brothers, duo électronique britannique formé par Tom Rowlands et Ed Simons, dévoilent le 22 novembre 2004 le clip de « Galvanize », premier single extrait de leur cinquième album Push the Button (2005), porté par la voix du rappeur américain Q-Tip. La réalisation est signée Adam Smith, avec Mark Murrell à la production et Dan Sherwen au montage.

Le clip s’ouvre sur trois adolescents au visage recouvert de peinture blanche façon clown, silhouettes fantomatiques qui traversent seuls la nuit urbaine, entre parkings désertés, ruelles et façades anonymes. Leur errance, filmée en clair-obscur et en mouvement constant, installe d’emblée une tension entre solitude et attente d’un ailleurs. Le trajet les conduit jusqu’à un club nommé Lyceo, dont l’entrée marque une rupture de ton : la caméra bascule d’un extérieur froid et vide à un intérieur saturé de couleurs, de sueur et de corps en mouvement.

À l’intérieur se déroule un battle de krump, style de danse urbaine né à Los Angeles et alors popularisé par le documentaire Rize, sorti la même année. Les danseurs s’affrontent dans une énergie brute, quasi rituelle, filmée en gros plans qui accentuent la puissance physique des gestes. L’un des trois garçons parvient à se glisser dans le cercle et à rejoindre la battle, comme absorbé par cette communauté éphémère — une bascule du conditionnement de la rue vers une forme de libération collective par le corps et le rythme. L’arrivée de la police vient interrompre cette parenthèse et disperser la foule, ramenant brutalement le récit vers l’extérieur d’où il était parti.

Cette construction en aller-retour — du dehors désert vers le dedans grouillant, puis retour à la rue — fait écho à la montée progressive du morceau, porté par un sample de chaabi marocain et la voix de Q-Tip. Le clip de « Galvanize » capte ainsi un instant de fusion collective, aussitôt refermé, entre les Chemical Brothers et l’imaginaire krump du milieu des années 2000.

The video opens on three teenage boys with their faces covered in white, clown-like face paint, ghostly figures wandering alone through the urban night, past empty car parks, back alleys and anonymous facades. Their journey, shot in stark chiaroscuro and constant motion, immediately sets up a tension between solitude and the anticipation of something else. Their path leads them to a club called Lyceo, whose entrance marks a shift in tone: the camera moves from a cold, empty exterior to an interior saturated with colour, sweat and moving bodies.

Inside, a krump battle unfolds — the urban dance style born in Los Angeles and popularised that same year by the documentary Rize. The dancers face off with raw, almost ritualistic energy, captured in close-ups that emphasise the physical power of their movements. One of the three boys manages to slip into the circle and join the battle, seemingly absorbed by this fleeting community — a shift from the conditioning of the street to a form of collective release through body and rhythm. The arrival of the police interrupts this parenthesis and scatters the crowd, abruptly pulling the narrative back out onto the street where it began.

This back-and-forth structure — from the deserted outside to the teeming inside, then back to the street — echoes the track’s gradual build, driven by a Moroccan chaabi sample and Q-Tip’s vocals. The « Galvanize » video thus captures a moment of collective fusion, as brief as it is intense, between The Chemical Brothers and the krump imagery of the mid-2000s.
