Furax Barbarossa, de son prénom Stéphane, est un rappeur et producteur français né le 4 février 1979 à Vesoul (Haute-Saône), d’origines corses, et ayant grandi à Toulouse. Figure exigeante du rap indépendant francophone, Furax Barbarossa incarne depuis plus de vingt ans une écriture sombre, dense et polysyllabique, portée par une voix éraillée et une poétique de la résistance qui lui ont valu une reconnaissance profonde dans les milieux underground.
La carrière de Furax Barbarossa débute au sein de la Section Marécage, premier collectif toulousain qu’il intègre au début des années 2000, avant de rejoindre Sale Elite Toulousaine et de cofonder Polychrome 7, label et collectif réunissant notamment Reda, DjAnce, Sendo, Komar, Apa-H et Mnc. C’est sous cette bannière qu’il publie son maxi Crash Test (2004) et ses deux premiers albums État des lieux (2006) et Black Album (2006, compilation d’inédits). Il quitte ensuite Polychrome 7 pour fonder avec Toxine, 10vers, Sendo et Abrazif le crew Bastard Prod. En 2008 paraissent En bas de l’échelle (solo) et Jour de deuil (avec Nera). En 2012, il participe à la compilation Inglourious Bastardz, projet collectif réunissant la fine fleur du rap underground francophone — Jeff Le Nerf, Scylla, Swift Guad, 10vers, L’Hexaler, Neka, Menshen — qui consolide sa réputation hors de Toulouse. Son album solo Testa Nera (24 mars 2014) est salué par sa fanbase comme l’une de ses œuvres les plus abouties. En 2017, il s’associe à Jeff Le Nerf pour Dernier Manuscrit (1er décembre 2017, Rootscore/Addictive Music, 13 titres), projet collaboratif très bien reçu. Pendant le confinement Furax Barbarossa publie À l’isolement (2020, série de freestyles) et l’EP Cha o Ha (2020, 5 titres). Caravelle (2022) marque son sixième album solo, propulsé par le titre « Uragano ». Libérable paraît en 2023. En 2025 sort Portes du désert, album collaboratif avec Scylla. Il a également écrit des scénarios pour des artistes tels que Ninho, Keblack et Naza.
Le style de Furax Barbarossa se caractérise par une architecture rimique polysyllabique complexe, exigeant de nombreuses écoutes pour être pleinement appréhendée. Ses textes, sombres et introspectifs, explorent la solitude, le doute, la résilience, la violence et l’industrie musicale avec une lucidité dépourvue de concession. Sa voix éraillée, rugueuse, constitue une signature immédiatement reconnaissable. L’esthétique boom bap de ses productions, souvent austères et nerveuses, s’est progressivement ouverte à de nouvelles couleurs sonores sans renoncer à sa densité lyrique fondamentale. A demanding figure in French-language independent rap for over twenty years, he embodies a dark, dense and polysyllabic writing style, carried by a raspy voice and a poetics of resistance that have earned him deep recognition in underground circles.
Furax Barbarossa's career began within Section Marécage, his first Toulouse collective, in the early 2000s, before he joined Sale Elite Toulousaine and co-founded Polychrome 7, a label and collective bringing together Reda, DjAnce, Sendo, Komar, Apa-H and Mnc. Under this banner he released the maxi Crash Test (2004) and his first two albums État des lieux (2006) and Black Album (2006, a compilation of unreleased tracks). He subsequently left Polychrome 7 to co-found Bastard Prod with Toxine, 10vers, Sendo and Abrazif. In 2008 came En bas de l'échelle (solo) and Jour de deuil (with Nera). In 2012 he appeared on the Inglourious Bastardz compilation, a collective project uniting the cream of French-language underground rap — Jeff Le Nerf, Scylla, Swift Guad, 10vers, L'Hexaler, Neka, Menshen — which consolidated his reputation beyond Toulouse. His solo album Testa Nera (24 March 2014) is regarded by his fanbase as one of his most accomplished works. In 2017 he joined forces with Jeff Le Nerf for Dernier Manuscrit (1 December 2017, Rootscore/Addictive Music, 13 tracks), a collaborative project well received by critics and fans alike. During lockdown Furax Barbarossa released À l'isolement (2020, a series of freestyles) and the EP Cha o Ha (2020, 5 tracks). Caravelle (2022) marked his sixth solo album, driven by the track "Uragano". Libérable followed in 2023. In 2025 came Portes du désert, a collaborative album with Scylla. He has also written scripts for artists including Ninho, Keblack and Naza.
