Kery James, de son vrai nom Alix Mathurin, est un rappeur, auteur-compositeur et acteur franco-haïtien né le 28 décembre 1977 aux Abymes, en Guadeloupe. Figure du rap conscient et politique en France depuis le début des années 1990, il s’est imposé au sein du collectif Mafia K’1 Fry avant de mener une carrière solo marquée par des textes engagés sur la vie en banlieue, les inégalités sociales et la question religieuse. Son univers, empreint de gravité et de lyrisme, en a fait l’une des voix les plus respectées du rap français.
Repéré très jeune par MC Solaar, qui l’enregistre en 1991 sous le pseudonyme Kery B sur le titre « Raggajam » de l’album Qui sème le vent récolte le tempo, Kery James fonde à l’âge de treize ans le groupe Idéal Junior avec Harry, Teddy et Selim, bientôt rejoints par DJ Mehdi à la production ; la formation prend le nom d’Idéal J et publie O’riginal MC’s sur une mission en 1996, puis Le combat continue en 1998, porté par le titre « Hardcore ». Parallèlement, Kery James intègre le collectif Mafia K’1 Fry. La mort de son ami Las Montana en 1999 provoque la dissolution du groupe et pousse le rappeur, converti à l’islam, à observer une pause avant d’entamer une carrière solo avec l’album Si c’était à refaire en 2001, disque d’or qui lui permet de se produire à l’Olympia dès mars 2002.
Considéré comme une figure du rap conscient et politique, Kery James développe une écriture dense et argumentative, construite comme des plaidoiries, où alternent récit social, introspection et dénonciation des inégalités touchant les quartiers populaires. Son flow, technique et posé, s’appuie sur des instrumentaux souvent proches du boom bap, avec des embellissements orchestraux ou acoustiques selon les albums, comme en témoigne la version acoustique 92.2012. Après Si c’était à refaire (2001) et Ma vérité (2005), Kery James connaît un net succès commercial avec À l’ombre du show business (2008), qui accueille une collaboration avec Charles Aznavour et se hisse au sommet des ventes. L’album Réel (2009) est suivi d’un concert événement au Zénith de Paris le 18 décembre 2009, immortalisé par le CD/DVD À mon public. Après une pause, il revient en 2012 avec la compilation acoustique 92.2012, puis publie Dernier MC (2013), porté par les singles « 94 c’est le Barça » et « Le Mystère féminin » (avec Imany). En 2016 paraît Mouhammad Alix, album engagé comprenant les titres « Racailles » et « Vivre ou mourir ensemble », écrit après les attentats du 13 novembre 2015, suivi par J’rap encore (2018). Reconnu par la presse spécialisée comme l’une des voix majeures du rap français engagé, Kery James élargit son travail au théâtre avec la pièce À vif (2017) puis au cinéma en coréalisant le film Banlieusards (2019), consacrant sa place dans le paysage culturel français au-delà du seul champ musical.

The album Réel (2009) was followed by a landmark concert at the Zénith de Paris on December 18, 2009, later released as the CD/DVD À mon public. After a break, he returned in 2012 with the acoustic compilation 92.2012, then released Dernier MC (2013), carried by the singles « 94 c’est le Barça » and « Le Mystère féminin » (featuring Imany). In 2016 came Mouhammad Alix, an outspoken album including the tracks « Racailles » and « Vivre ou mourir ensemble, » written in the aftermath of the November 13, 2015 attacks, followed by J’rap encore (2018).
