DJ Mehdi, de son vrai nom Mehdi Favéris-Essaïdi, est un DJ et producteur franco-tunisien né en 1977 et mort en 2011, figure majeure de la scène hip-hop puis électro française. Passé par le rap avant de rejoindre le label Ed Banger Records, il a construit une œuvre à la croisée du hip-hop old school et de la house music. Disparu prématurément, il demeure une figure tutélaire de la French Touch.
Né le 20 janvier 1977 à Asnières-sur-Seine, d’un père français et d’une mère tunisienne, Mehdi Favéris-Essaïdi grandit à Gennevilliers et découvre le rap dès l’enfance. Il rejoint en 1995 le collectif Mafia K’1 Fry comme producteur attitré et collabore avec le groupe 113, notamment sur l’album Les Princes de la Ville, récompensé de deux Victoires de la Musique. En 1997, il fonde le label Espionnage et travaille également pour MC Solaar sur l’album Paradisiaque. Son premier album solo, (The Story of) Espion, paraît en 2002. Repéré par son ami et manager Pedro Winter, Dj Mehdi signe en 2006 chez Ed Banger Records, où il publie l’album Lucky Boy, premier disque du label ; suivront Lucky Boy at Night (2007), l’EP Lucky Girl (2007) et Red, Black & Blue (2009). En 2010, il forme avec le DJ britannique Riton le duo Carte Blanche.
Le style de DJ Mehdi se caractérise par une hybridation constante entre hip-hop old school et house music, nourrie par une culture funk et disco acquise dès l’enfance. Ses productions superposent samples soul, boucles funk et rythmiques électro, dans un « swing electro » revendiqué par l’artiste lui-même. Producteur recherché, il a collaboré ou remixé Daft Punk, Cassius, Chromeo, MC Solaar, Futura 2000 ou Asian Dub Foundation, brouillant les frontières entre rap français et scène électronique parisienne. Cette double culture a fait de lui l’un des artisans du rapprochement entre hip-hop et French Touch au tournant des années 2000, portée par une passion affichée pour le mix et la platine.
Au sein du collectif Mafia K’1 Fry puis du groupe 113, DJ Mehdi contribue à l’album Les Princes de la Ville, double lauréat aux Victoires de la Musique en 2000. Son virage électro s’amorce avec (The Story of) Espion en 2002, avant l’album Lucky Boy en 2006, premier disque publié par Ed Banger Records, suivi de sa version remixée Lucky Boy at Night en 2007 et de l’EP Lucky Girl la même année. Il publie également la mixtape Loukoums (2006) en hommage à J Dilla, puis l’album collectif Red, Black & Blue en 2009, réunissant l’écurie Ed Banger. Son single « I Am Somebody » est utilisé dans une publicité américaine pour XM Radio en 2007. Cofondateur du collectif Club 75 aux côtés de Cassius, Justice et Pedro Winter, il forme en 2010 le duo Carte Blanche avec Riton. DJ Mehdi meurt accidentellement le 13 septembre 2011 à Paris, laissant une œuvre saluée comme l’une des plus influentes du dialogue entre rap et électro français.

Spotted by his friend and manager Pedro Winter, Dj Mehdi signed with Ed Banger Records in 2006, releasing the album Lucky Boy, the label’s very first release; it was followed by Lucky Boy at Night (2007), the EP Lucky Girl (2007) and Red, Black & Blue (2009). In 2010, he formed the duo Carte Blanche with British DJ Riton.
DJ Mehdi’s style is marked by a constant hybridisation of old-school hip-hop and house music, fed by a funk and disco culture absorbed since childhood. His productions layer soul samples, funk loops and electro rhythms in what he himself called an « electro swing. » A sought-after producer, he collaborated with or remixed Daft Punk, Cassius, Chromeo, MC Solaar, Futura 2000 and Asian Dub Foundation, blurring the boundaries between French rap and the Parisian electronic scene. This dual culture made him one of the architects of the rapprochement between hip-hop and French Touch at the turn of the 2000s, driven by an outspoken passion for the mix and the turntable.
Within the Mafia K’1 Fry collective and later the group 113, DJ Mehdi contributed to the album Les Princes de la Ville, a double winner at the 2000 Victoires de la Musique. His shift toward electro began with (The Story of) Espion in 2002, ahead of the album Lucky Boy in 2006, Ed Banger Records’ first-ever release, followed by its remixed edition Lucky Boy at Night in 2007 and the EP Lucky Girl the same year. He also released the mixtape Loukoums (2006), a tribute to J Dilla, then the collective album Red, Black & Blue in 2009, bringing together the Ed Banger roster. His single « I Am Somebody » was used in a 2007 US advertising campaign for XM Radio. Co-founder of the Club 75 collective alongside Cassius, Justice and Pedro Winter, he formed the duo Carte Blanche with Riton in 2010. DJ Mehdi died accidentally on 13 September 2011 in Paris, leaving behind a body of work regarded as one of the most influential in bridging French rap and electro.
