Beastie Boys est un groupe américain formé à New York en 1981, composé de Michael « Mike D » Diamond, Adam « MCA » Yauch et Adam « Ad-Rock » Horovitz. Issus du punk hardcore new-yorkais, ils deviennent l’un des groupes les plus influents de l’histoire du hip-hop, premiers rappeurs blancs à toucher un large public. Leur trajectoire mêle punk, rap, funk et sampling, jusqu’à la mort de MCA en 2012, qui met fin à l’aventure du groupe.
Le groupe naît en 1981 comme quatuor punk hardcore, réunissant Adam Yauch, Michael Diamond, John Berry et Kate Schellenbach. Après le départ de Berry, remplacé par Adam Horovitz en 1983, le trio s’oriente vers le hip-hop avec le single Cooky Puss, qui rencontre un succès dans les clubs underground new-yorkais. Rick Rubin, alors étudiant et futur cofondateur de Def Jam, devient leur DJ puis producteur. Le groupe signe chez Def Jam et publie en 1986 son premier album, Licensed to Ill, qui devient le premier album de rap numéro un du Billboard aux États-Unis. Après un accueil plus mitigé pour Paul’s Boutique (1989), coproduit avec les Dust Brothers, le trio s’installe à Los Angeles avant de fonder son propre label, Grand Royal, au début des années 1990.
Le style des Beastie Boys repose sur une fusion singulière de punk hardcore, de hip-hop, de funk et de sampling, avec un usage marqué de l’humour et de la provocation dans les textes. À partir de Check Your Head (1992), le groupe réintègre ses propres instruments (basse, batterie, guitare) aux côtés du claviériste Money Mark et du percussionniste Eric Bobo, mêlant jeu live et samples.
