Richie Hawtin est un musicien électronique et DJ britanno-canadien, figure majeure de la scène techno depuis le début des années 1990. Connu sous son propre nom ainsi que sous les alias Plastikman et F.U.S.E., il s’est imposé comme l’un des principaux artisans de la techno minimale, un genre dont il a contribué à façonner puis à diffuser le son à l’échelle internationale. Installé initialement à Windsor, en Ontario, au contact direct de la scène de Detroit, Richie Hawtin évolue aujourd’hui entre plusieurs bases, dont Berlin. Son univers, à la fois expérimental et épuré, s’est construit autour de labels qu’il a lui-même fondés.
Né le 4 juin 1970 à Banbury, dans l’Oxfordshire, en Angleterre, Richie Hawtin déménage à l’âge de neuf ans avec ses parents à LaSalle, en Ontario, une banlieue de Windsor, juste en face de Detroit. C’est ce voisinage direct avec la scène techno naissante de Detroit qui oriente durablement son parcours : il commence à mixer en 1987 et s’intègre rapidement au réseau de musiciens et producteurs de la ville, s’inspirant notamment de Juan Atkins et Derrick May. En mai 1990, il cofonde avec John Acquaviva le label Plus 8 Records, ainsi que son sous-label plus dur Probe. Sous le pseudonyme F.U.S.E., il publie en 1993 son premier album, Dimension Intrusion, dans le cadre de la série Artificial Intelligence du label britannique Warp. En 1998, il lance son propre label, M-nus, qui devient une plateforme centrale pour la techno minimale. Il s’installe à Berlin au début des années 2000, au moment où ce courant gagne une reconnaissance plus large.
Le style de Richie Hawtin, en particulier sous l’alias Plastikman, se caractérise par une approche épurée et hypnotique de la techno, marquée par des textures acides, des boucles minimalistes et une utilisation poussée des machines (boîtes à rythmes, synthétiseurs analogiques). Ses influences revendiquées mêlent la pop électronique européenne, notamment Kraftwerk et New Order, à la techno futuriste de Detroit. Il s’est également distingué par ses sets live et ses mix CD, qui exploitent des technologies de DJing avancées pour superposer et manipuler simultanément plusieurs sources sonores, brouillant la frontière entre performance live et production studio.
Parmi ses œuvres majeures figurent les albums Plastikman Musik (1994) et Consumed (1998), ainsi que le mix CD Decks, EFX & 909 (1999), souvent considéré comme une référence du genre. Richie Hawtin publie ensuite plusieurs mix albums marquants, dont DE9 | Closer to the Edit (2001) et DE9 | Transitions (2005). En 2013, avec son frère Matthew, il présente l’installation conceptuelle Contained à Art Basel Miami, puis se produit en tant que Plastikman au Guggenheim de New York, ce qui donne naissance à l’album EX (2014). En 2015, l’université de Huddersfield lui décerne un doctorat honorifique en technologie musicale, année où il publie également From My Mind to Yours pour les 25 ans de Plus 8. De 2012 à 2015, il tient une résidence hebdomadaire, ENTER., au Space Ibiza. En 2016, il fonde l’entreprise technologique PLAYdifferently et lance la table de mixage MODEL 1. Il a reçu à trois reprises le DJ Award du meilleur DJ techno, sur un total de dix-sept nominations.

In May 1990, he co-founded Plus 8 Records with John Acquaviva, along with its harder sublabel Probe. Under the pseudonym F.U.S.E., he released his debut album, Dimension Intrusion, in 1993 as part of British label Warp’s Artificial Intelligence series. In 1998, he launched his own label, M-nus, which became a central platform for minimal techno. He relocated to Berlin in the early 2000s, just as the movement gained wider recognition.
Richie Hawtin’s style, particularly under the Plastikman alias, is defined by a stripped-down, hypnotic approach to techno, marked by acid textures, minimalist loops, and an extensive use of machines (drum machines, analog synthesizers). His acknowledged influences blend European electronic pop, notably Kraftwerk and New Order, with the futuristic techno of Detroit. He also distinguished himself through his live sets and mix CDs, which employed advanced DJing technology to layer and manipulate multiple sound sources simultaneously, blurring the line between live performance and studio production.
Among his major works are the Plastikman albums Musik (1994) and Consumed (1998), as well as the mix CD Decks, EFX & 909 (1999), often regarded as a genre reference. Richie Hawtin went on to release several notable mix albums, including DE9 | Closer to the Edit (2001) and DE9 | Transitions (2005). In 2013, together with his brother Matthew, he presented the conceptual installation Contained at Art Basel Miami, then performed as Plastikman at the Guggenheim in New York, which led to the album EX (2014). In 2015, the University of Huddersfield awarded him an honorary doctorate in music technology, the same year he released From My Mind to Yours to mark Plus 8’s 25th anniversary. From 2012 to 2015, he held a weekly residency, ENTER., at Space Ibiza. In 2016, he founded the technology company PLAYdifferently and launched the MODEL 1 mixer. He has won the DJ Award for Best Techno DJ three times, out of a total of seventeen nominations.
