Massive Attack – Protection (1995)

Massive Attack et Tracey Thorn signent avec Protection l’un des morceaux phares de l’album éponyme sorti en 1994, single publié le 9 janvier 1995. Le clip, réalisé par Michel Gondry en décembre 1994 dans un studio parisien, est resté dans les mémoires pour son dispositif technique autant que pour son atmosphère. Massive Attack et Tracey Thorn y apparaissent au sein d’un immeuble reconstitué non pas debout, mais construit à plat, à l’horizontale, sur le sol d’un vaste plateau de tournage.

Le clip de Protection se présente comme un plan-séquence continu : la caméra glisse le long de cette façade allongée et pénètre successivement dans les appartements, où elle croise différents habitants filmés dans l’intimité de leur quotidien, avant de ressortir pour continuer sa course le long du bâtiment. Le vertige de la mise en scène tient à cette illusion parfaite de verticalité et de profondeur, obtenue par des jeux de miroirs et de projections pour simuler couloirs et circulation extérieure, ainsi que par des éléments de décor amovibles permettant à la caméra de circuler d’une pièce à l’autre sans coupe visible. Tracey Thorn elle-même n’est pas debout mais allongée sur le dos pour chanter face caméra, ce simple changement d’axe suffisant, dans ce dispositif horizontal, à donner l’illusion qu’elle se tient droite à une fenêtre.

Ce tour de force technique, que le groupe a qualifié de tournage parmi les plus éprouvants de sa carrière, n’a pu être conçu qu’à l’aide d’une maquette réduite que Gondry avait apportée pour expliquer son idée, tant le principe défiait toute mise en storyboard classique. L’ambiance intime et mélancolique de Protection épouse le climat du morceau, porté par la voix de Tracey Thorn et construit autour d’un sample du groove de « The Payback » de James Brown, dans la continuité du son plus feutré que Massive Attack cherchait à développer après leur premier album.

Protection fut la seule collaboration entre Michel Gondry et Massive Attack, mais elle reste comptée parmi les réalisations les plus ingénieuses du réalisateur français, déjà reconnu pour son sens de l’illusion optique et des dispositifs de tournage inédits, qu’on retrouvera plus tard dans ses collaborations avec Björk, The Chemical Brothers ou Radiohead. Le clip de Protection demeure, près de trente ans après sa sortie, une référence citée pour sa prouesse de mise en scène autant que pour l’émotion contenue qu’il installe entre les habitants filmés et la voix de Tracey Thorn.

The video unfolds as a single continuous take: the camera glides along this elongated façade and moves in and out of the apartments, briefly catching glimpses of different residents in their everyday lives, before pulling back out to continue its journey along the building. The dizzying effect of the staging comes from the perfect illusion of verticality and depth, achieved through mirrors and projected images to simulate hallways and outdoor traffic, as well as removable set pieces that let the camera travel from room to room without a visible cut. Tracey Thorn herself is not standing but lying on her back to sing to camera, a simple change of axis that, within this horizontal set-up, is enough to create the illusion that she is standing upright at a window.

This technical feat, which the band described as one of the most gruelling shoots of their career, could only be conceived with the help of a scaled-down model Gondry brought along to explain his idea, since the concept defied conventional storyboarding altogether. The intimate, melancholic mood of the video matches the tone of the track, carried by Tracey Thorn’s voice and built around a sample of the groove from James Brown’s « The Payback », in keeping with the more subdued sound Massive Attack were pursuing after their debut album.

Protection remained the only collaboration between Michel Gondry and Massive Attack, yet it stands among the French director’s most inventive works, already known for his flair for optical illusion and unconventional shooting rigs, which would later resurface in his collaborations with Björk, The Chemical Brothers and Radiohead. Nearly thirty years after its release, the Protection video is still cited as a reference both for its staging feat and for the quiet emotion it builds between the filmed residents and Tracey Thorn’s voice.
