Biffy Clyro – The Vertigo of Bliss (2003)

The Vertigo of Bliss est le deuxième album du groupe écossais Biffy Clyro, paru le 16 juin 2003 chez Beggars Banquet. Enregistré dans la foulée de leur premier disque Blackened Sky, il s’inscrit dans un rock alternatif hybride, entre post-hardcore et math rock. Sa pochette, signée par le dessinateur italien Milo Manara, a marqué les esprits par son caractère explicitement érotique. L’album culmine à la 48e place des classements britanniques. Quatre singles en sont extraits : « Joy.Discovery.Invention », « The Ideal Height », « Questions and Answers » et « Eradicate the Doubt ». Pour la pochette, le label a fait appel à Milo Manara, figure majeure de la bande dessinée italienne connue pour son trait érotique, dont l’illustration a suscité une controverse immédiate, y compris une tentative de dissimulation de l’image lors d’une tournée du groupe.

Musicalement, l’album mêle structures heurtées, changements de tempo abrupts et passages plus mélodiques, dans un style qualifié tour à tour de post-hardcore, de rock alternatif, d’art rock et de math rock. Les cordes, notamment sur « With Aplomb » et « Now the Action Is On Fire! », apportent une dimension atmosphérique nouvelle par rapport au premier album du groupe. Sur le plan visuel, la pochette de Manara a suscité une polémique à sa sortie avant d’être distinguée a posteriori par le magazine ShortList, qui l’a classée parmi les « 50 pochettes d’album les plus cool de tous les temps », soulignant son caractère érotique et controversé comme facteur de fidélisation d’un public de niche. Le chanteur Simon Neil est revenu sur cet épisode, reconnaissant avoir été surpris par la virulence des réactions initiales. Une réédition remasterisée, incluant des faces B des singles, est parue en 2012.

Frontman Simon Neil later reflected on the episode, acknowledging he was caught off guard by the intensity of the initial backlash. A remastered reissue, including B-sides from the album’s singles, was released in 2012.
