The Hours – See the light (2009)

See The Light est le deuxième album du duo britannique The Hours, formé par Antony Genn et Martin Slattery, sorti le 20 avril 2009 sur le label Is Good. Produit par Flood, l’album prolonge l’identité visuelle du groupe autour de l’imagerie du crâne, ici déclinée en pochette par l’artiste britannique Damien Hirst, déjà associé au premier album Narcissus Road. L’album a été enregistré au studio Assault & Battery 2, sous la houlette de Flood, producteur associé à plusieurs formations de rock britannique. Hirst, ami proche du groupe depuis la collaboration sur Narcissus Road et sur le projet For The Love Of God, s’est impliqué au-delà de la seule pochette : il a assuré la direction artistique du clip du single « Big Black Hole » et a conçu, pour l’ensemble du dispositif promotionnel, une clé USB en forme de crâne ainsi qu’un boîtier CD tridimensionnel vendu séparément sur sa boutique en ligne. La pochette du LP et du CD reprend le motif du crâne sous la forme d’un de ses « Spin Paintings », prolongé dans un livret de douze pages associant peintures, photographies et paroles. Le titre-phare, « See the Light », a également donné lieu à un clip mettant en scène l’actrice Sienna Miller.

Musicalement, l’album s’inscrit dans un indie rock mélodique porté par le piano de Martin Slattery, souvent rapproché du style de Coldplay, et par la voix ample d’Antony Genn, marquée par son parcours personnel de sortie de dépendance. Les arrangements de Flood privilégient une production dense, avec orchestrations à cordes et refrains amples, parfois jugés démonstratifs par la critique. Sur le plan visuel, la pochette de Hirst reprend le vocabulaire chromatique et giratoire de ses Spin Paintings, associé au motif du crâne déjà identifié comme signature graphique du groupe, dans la continuité de son travail pour Joe Strummer & the Mescaleros.

L’accueil critique de See The Light a été partagé : plusieurs médias spécialisés, dont musicOMH, DIY Magazine et The Line of Best Fit, ont salué l’ambition et la sincérité du disque tout en pointant un systématisme dans les arrangements. Sur le plan visuel, la pochette a figuré parmi les 50 finalistes du prix Best Art Vinyl 2009. Le lancement s’est accompagné d’un concours organisé avec Observer Music Monthly, offrant vingt lithographies signées et une chance de remporter l’œuvre originale de Hirst, alors estimée à 125 000 livres sterling. « Big Black Hole » a servi de premier single.

Visually, Hirst’s artwork carries over the swirling colour language of his Spin Paintings while retaining the skull imagery already established as the band’s graphic signature, in continuity with his earlier work for Joe Strummer & the Mescaleros.

Critical reception of See The Light was mixed: outlets including musicOMH, DIY Magazine and The Line of Best Fit praised the album’s ambition and sincerity while noting a repetitive quality in its arrangements. On the visual side, the sleeve was shortlisted among the top 50 designs for the 2009 Best Art Vinyl award. The release was accompanied by a contest run with Observer Music Monthly, offering twenty signed lithographs and a chance to win Hirst’s original artwork, then valued at £125,000. « Big Black Hole » served as the lead single.
