Puppetmastaz est un groupe de hip-hop et musique électronique allemand originaire de Berlin, fondé dans les années 1990 par Paul Affeld, alias Mr. Maloke, actif depuis lors sur la scène rap alternative européenne. Sa particularité tient à la mise en scène de ses membres sous forme de marionnettes à gaine, chaque personnage masquant l’identité d’un rappeur ou d’un musicien. Le collectif développe un univers atypique mêlant rap, funk et électronique, à la croisée du cirque et de la culture club. Il est notamment connu pour les albums Creature Funk et The Takeover.
Fondé à Berlin dans les années 1990 à l’initiative de Paul Affeld, alias Mr. Maloke, le projet Puppetmastaz naît de la rencontre entre cet artiste et un groupe d’amateurs de marionnettes réunis autour d’un « congrès des marionnettes ». Le collectif s’étoffe progressivement, jusqu’à réunir une vingtaine de personnages, chacun incarné par un musicien ou un rappeur distinct, parmi lesquels des artistes tels que Chilly Gonzales ou Mocky sont associés au projet. Après plusieurs EP publiés au début des années 2000, dont Pet Sound et Zoology, le groupe sort son premier album, Creature Funk, en 2003, suivi de Creature Shock Radio en 2006. En 2008, il publie The Takeover, avant de connaître une rupture avec The Break Up (2009), album marqué par des morceaux solo de plusieurs marionnettes et suivi d’une séparation temporaire du collectif.
Le style musical de Puppetmastaz repose sur un mélange de rap, de funk et de musique électronique, porté par des personnalités vocales distinctes propres à chaque marionnette. L’esthétique du groupe emprunte autant à la culture hip-hop qu’à celle du théâtre de marionnettes et du cirque, avec une dimension scénique et visuelle marquée en concert. Les productions mêlent samples, rythmes électroniques et interventions rap, dans un registre volontiers satirique et second degré. Le collectif a par ailleurs collaboré avec des artistes tels que Le Peuple de l’Herbe, Modeselektor, Soom T ou T. Raumschmiere, illustrant une porosité revendiquée entre scènes hip-hop et électronique.
La discographie de Puppetmastaz comprend notamment les albums Creature Funk (2003), Creature Shock Radio (2006), The Takeover (2008), The Break Up (2009), Revolve and Step Up (2012) et Keep Yo Animal (2016), ce dernier accueillant une participation de l’artiste français Hippocampe Fou. En 2007, le groupe publie une reprise du titre Give Peace a Chance de John Lennon en soutien à Amnesty International. Le collectif se produit dans plusieurs pays européens ainsi qu’au Japon, et se distingue par des concerts intégralement mis en scène à travers ses marionnettes. Après une séparation consécutive à l’accueil mitigé de The Break Up, le groupe se reforme en 2012. En France, Puppetmastaz est notamment programmé au festival Marionnettissimo ainsi qu’aux Z’Éclectiques en 2016, événements qui témoignent de sa position singulière entre scène musicale et arts de la marionnette.
