Ed Banger Records est un label discographique français de musique électronique fondé en mars 2003 à Montmartre, Paris, par Pedro Winter, alias Busy P, qui a créé Ed Banger Records en mars 2003 à Montmartre, au nord de Paris. Émanation de sa société Headbangers Entertainment, le label s’impose comme l’un des piliers de la scène electro-house et de ce qu’on appellera la « French touch » de seconde génération. Il rassemble des artistes tels que Justice, SebastiAn, Breakbot, Mr. Oizo, DJ Mehdi ou Cassius, autour d’une identité sonore et visuelle immédiatement reconnaissable, portée notamment par le travail graphique de So Me.
Avant Ed Banger, Pedro Winter avait été le manager de Daft Punk de 1996 à 2008, et c’est en 2002 qu’il crée Headbangers Entertainment, structure via laquelle il gère plusieurs artistes dont Cassius et DJ Mehdi. Un an plus tard, il fonde Ed Banger Records, qui signe d’abord Mr. Flash avec le titre « Radar Rider », avant de signer Justice, puis SebastiAn en 2004, suivis d’Uffie, DJ Mehdi et Mr. Oizo. Selon le site officiel du label, le deuxième disque publié, « We Are Your Friends » de Justice, devient un hymne générationnel. Les débuts sont pourtant loin d’être évidents : Winter raconte avoir lancé le label à une période où la French touch n’était plus à la mode et où le marché du disque traversait une crise profonde. Le succès s’installe progressivement, jusqu’à une reconnaissance internationale marquée, entre autres, par une pleine page consacrée au label dans le New York Times en 2007.
Le son Ed Banger se caractérise par un mélange assumé entre house, hip-hop, rock et disco, servi par une production saturée et énergique. D’après les témoignages de Myd et Breakbot recueillis par Rolling Stone, cette identité mêle un aspect dansant à une dimension mélancolique et romantique, héritée en partie de l’influence hip-hop de DJ Mehdi, capable de faire dialoguer house, techno et rap. L’esthétique visuelle du label, conçue en grande partie par So Me, participe pleinement de cette identité de marque, au point que l’imagerie post-cartoon de SO ME est devenue une véritable icône de la pop culture, en particulier dans l’univers des blogs et réseaux sociaux au tournant des années 2010.
Vingt ans après sa création, Ed Banger affiche un catalogue fort de 350 sorties et une influence durable sur la musique électronique et au-delà : des titres comme « Pop the Glock » d’Uffie ou « I Love You So » de Cassius ont notamment été samplés ou cités par des artistes tels que Kanye West, Jay-Z ou Charli XCX. Le label a marqué le 15ᵉ anniversaire de sa création en 2018 par un concert donné le 31 mars 2018 au Grand Rex, avec les titres phares du label réorchestrés par un orchestre symphonique de 70 musiciens, l’Orchestre Lamoureux, dirigé par Thomas Roussel.
