Run the Jewels est un duo américain de hip-hop formé en 2013 par le rappeur et producteur Jaime Meline, dit El-P, originaire de Brooklyn, et le rappeur Michael Render, dit Killer Mike, originaire d’Atlanta. Nés à moins de deux mois d’écart en 1975, tous deux issus de scènes hip-hop indépendantes distinctes, ils se sont associés pour former l’un des groupes les plus salués de la scène rap contemporaine, connu pour des productions énergiques et des textes engagés sur les questions sociales et politiques.
El-P s’est d’abord fait connaître à la fin des années 1990 comme figure du hip-hop underground new-yorkais avec le trio Company Flow, avant de fonder le label indépendant Definitive Jux. Killer Mike, membre du collectif Dungeon Family et proche d’Outkast, s’est imposé dans le rap sudiste au cours des années 2000. Les deux artistes sont mis en contact par le producteur télévisuel Jason DeMarco vers 2011, ce qui aboutit en 2012 à la production par El-P de l’album Killer Mike « R.A.P. Music », saluée par la critique. Cette collaboration se transforme en 2013 en un projet commun baptisé Run the Jewels, nom emprunté à une expression du rappeur LL Cool J désignant un braquage.
Le style de Run the Jewels repose sur une alliance entre les productions industrielles et abrasives d’El-P et les flows massifs et rythmés de Killer Mike, le tout porté par des rimes techniques et une énergie de confrontation assumée.
