Jeff Mills, également connu sous le pseudonyme The Wizard, est un DJ, producteur et compositeur américain né le 18 juin 1963 à Détroit, dans le Michigan. Figure fondatrice de la scène techno de Détroit et cofondateur du collectif Underground Resistance, il s’est imposé comme l’un des artisans majeurs de la techno minimaliste à travers son label Axis Records. Son travail, marqué par une esthétique futuriste et une rigueur rythmique extrême, s’étend aujourd’hui du club à la musique orchestrale et aux bandes originales de films muets.
Formé en autodidacte à la batterie puis aux platines, Jeff Mills se fait connaître dès le milieu des années 1980 sous le pseudonyme The Wizard, animateur d’émissions nocturnes sur les radios WDRQ puis WJLB à Détroit, où il contribue à diffuser la scène techno naissante aux côtés de Juan Atkins, Derrick May et Kevin Saunderson. À la fin de la décennie, il forme le projet industriel Final Cut avec Anthony Srock, avant de rencontrer « Mad » Mike Banks en 1989 ; leur association donne naissance au collectif Underground Resistance, officiellement fondé en 1990 avec Robert Hood. En 1992, Jeff Mills quitte le collectif et Détroit pour s’installer à New York, où il devient résident du club Limelight, signe avec le label berlinois Tresor et fonde son propre label, Axis Records, plus tard établi à Chicago.
Jeff Mills développe une approche minimaliste et hypnotique de la techno, caractérisée par des rythmiques martelées, des textures industrielles et un sens aigu de la tension et de la dynamique en club, souvent joué sur plusieurs platines ou machines simultanément. Ses productions, empreintes d’un imaginaire futuriste et de science-fiction, s’inscrivent dans la filiation de la techno de Détroit tout en explorant des registres plus abstraits sur des sous-labels comme Purpose Maker. À partir des années 2000, il élargit son langage sonore à des collaborations avec des orchestres symphoniques et à la composition de bandes originales pour des films muets, mêlant électronique, orchestration classique et expérimentation cinématographique.
Sa carrière solo s’ouvre avec Waveform Transmission, Vol. 1 (1992) chez Tresor, suivi du Vol. 3 (1994), qui marque une évolution vers des formes plus expérimentales. L’EP Kat Moda (1997), publié sur le sous-label Purpose Maker, contient le morceau « The Bells », devenu un classique incontournable de la techno. En 2000, Jeff Mills compose une nouvelle bande originale pour le film muet Metropolis de Fritz Lang, projetée dans des salles prestigieuses telles que le Royal Albert Hall de Londres, une démarche qu’il renouvelle en 2005 avec Les Trois âges de Buster Keaton pour MK2, puis en 2016 avec Le Voyage dans la Lune de Georges Méliès. En 2006, l’album Blue Potential, enregistré avec l’Orchestre philharmonique de Montpellier sous la direction d’Alain Altinoglu, illustre son rapprochement avec la musique orchestrale. Reconnu comme l’une des figures les plus influentes de la techno internationale, il est fait chevalier des Arts et des Lettres par le ministère français de la Culture en 2007, tout en poursuivant une discographie prolifique sur son label Axis, entre albums conceptuels et sorties club.

His solo career opened with Waveform Transmission, Vol. 1 (1992) on Tresor, followed by Vol. 3 (1994), which marked a shift toward more experimental forms. The Kat Moda EP (1997), released on the Purpose Maker sub-label, includes « The Bells, » which has become an essential classic of techno. In 2000, Jeff Mills composed a new score for Fritz Lang’s silent film Metropolis, screened at prestigious venues such as London’s Royal Albert Hall, an approach he revisited in 2005 with Buster Keaton’s Three Ages for MK2, and again in 2016 with Georges Méliès’s A Trip to the Moon. In 2006, the album Blue Potential, recorded with the Montpellier Philharmonic Orchestra under Alain Altinoglu, illustrated his growing engagement with orchestral music. Recognized as one of the most influential figures in international techno, he was named a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture in 2007, while continuing a prolific output on his Axis label, spanning conceptual albums and club-oriented releases.
