DJ Shadow, de son vrai nom Joshua Paul Davis, est un producteur, DJ et compositeur américain né le 29 juin 1972. Originaire de la région de la baie de San Francisco et associé à la petite ville universitaire de Davis, en Californie, il s’est imposé comme une figure centrale du hip-hop instrumental et de l’art de l’échantillonnage. Son travail, marqué par l’usage massif de samples issus d’une collection personnelle de plus de 60 000 disques, l’a placé au cœur de l’émergence du courant dit trip-hop dans les années 1990.
Passionné de hip-hop dès l’adolescence à contre-courant du rock alors dominant dans sa ville, Josh Davis commence à expérimenter la production sur un quatre-pistes au lycée avant de devenir DJ à la radio universitaire KDVS lors de ses études à l’université de Californie à Davis. Il y cofonde le label Solesides avec plusieurs artistes locaux dont Blackalicious et Lyrics Born, et publie dès 1991 ses premières cassettes-mixes sous le nom Shadow. Repéré par le magazine The Source puis par James Lavelle, fondateur du label londonien Mo’Wax, il publie des singles remarqués comme « In/Flux » et « Lost and Found (S.F.L.) », avant de sortir en 1996 son premier album, « Endtroducing….. », entièrement construit à partir d’échantillons.
