Plastikman – Closer (2003)

Closer est le cinquième album studio publié sous l’alias Plastikman par le producteur canadien Richie Hawtin, sorti le 21 octobre 2003 sur les labels Minus et Novamute. Enregistré au studio The Building, en Ontario, ce disque marque le retour de Hawtin sous ce pseudonyme cinq ans après Artifakts [bc] (1998). Porté par une esthétique minimale, sombre et hypnotique, l’album explore des textures acides et ambiantes caractéristiques de la techno minimale. Il s’inscrit comme une pièce marquante du parcours de Hawtin, figure centrale de la scène techno nord-américaine.

L’ensemble des dix titres a été écrit et produit par Richie Hawtin, qui a également conçu le concept visuel de la pochette, tandis que le design a été confié au studio Constructure et la photographie à Vern Harvey. Enregistré au studio The Building, en Ontario, Closer succède à Artifakts [bc], marquant un net écart temporel dans la discographie de Plastikman. Le titre « Disconnect » a fait l’objet d’une sortie séparée en 12 pouces. L’album a atteint la 41e place du UK Independent Albums Chart à sa sortie. À sa sortie, Closer a reçu un accueil critique contrasté : Metacritic lui attribue une note agrégée de 73/100, AllMusic une évaluation de trois étoiles et demie sur cinq, tandis que Rolling Stone et Spin se sont montrés plus réservés, et Stylus Magazine plus favorable. Resident Advisor a par la suite classé l’album à la 56e place de son palmarès des cent meilleurs albums des années 2000. Le disque est régulièrement décrit par les auditeurs comme une expérience intense et hypnotique, comparée par certains à Sheet One (1993), premier album de Plastikman, bien que d’autres soulignent que Hawtin y prolonge sa recherche sonore plutôt que d’en répéter les formes. Closer est resté le dernier album studio sous l’alias Plastikman jusqu’à EX, paru en 2014.

On release, Closer received a mixed critical reception: Metacritic gave it an aggregate score of 73/100, AllMusic rated it three and a half stars out of five, while Rolling Stone and Spin were more reserved and Stylus Magazine more favorable. Resident Advisor later ranked the album 56th on its list of the top 100 albums of the 2000s. Listeners have consistently described it as an intense, hypnotic experience, with some comparing it to Sheet One (1993), Plastikman’s debut album, though others note that Hawtin was extending his sonic exploration rather than repeating earlier forms. Closer remained the last Plastikman studio album until EX, released in 2014.
