Sorti le 6 novembre 2015 sous le label indépendant Spookland, distribué par Sony Music / Columbia, Zanaka est le premier album studio de Jeanne Galice, dite Jain, auteure-compositrice-interprète née le 7 février 1992 à Toulouse. Son titre signifie « enfant » en malgache et constitue un hommage à sa mère franco-malgache. En dix titres entièrement chantés en anglais, cet album de pop électronique à fort ancrage world déploie un univers cosmopolite, nourri des expatriations africaines et moyen-orientales de l’artiste, et s’impose en France comme à l’international comme une révélation pop majeure de 2015–2016. Jain grandit en suivant les mutations professionnelles de son père dans l’industrie pétrolière, passant par Dubaï, Pointe-Noire (Congo-Brazzaville) et Abu Dhabi. C’est à Pointe-Noire qu’elle s’initie à la production musicale avec le logiciel Fruity Loops, sous l’influence d’un producteur local surnommé Mr. Flash, et commence à composer ses premières maquettes imprégnées de rumba congolaise et de musiques africaines. Revenue en France pour des études d’art à Paris, elle publie ses démos sur MySpace, où elles sont découvertes par le chanteur-producteur Maxim Nucci, alias Yodelice. Ce dernier l’invite à le rejoindre, devient son producteur, et l’intègre en premières parties de sa tournée ainsi que de celle de Christine and the Queens. En 2013, les deux artistes interprètent ensemble « Redemption Song » dans l’émission Taratata. Yodelice produit et enregistre l’intégralité de l’album au Spookland Studio à Paris. Le premier single, « Come », paraît le 11 mai 2015 ; il est précédé d’un EP, Hope, sorti en juin 2015, qui contient également « Makeba ». L’album est mastérisé par Herb Powers aux PM Studios d’Orlando (États-Unis). Zanaka s’inscrit dans un carrefour de genres difficile à réduire à une seule étiquette : électro-pop, reggae, world music, folk et touches hip-hop se croisent titre après titre. Les productions de Yodelice mêlent programmations rythmiques denses, samples traités — dont un extrait du titre « Me and the Gang » (1978) d’Hamilton Bohannon au cœur de « Makeba » — et arrangements teintés de cuivres (trombone d’Adrien Hurtebize sur plusieurs pistes). La voix de Jain, lumineuse et rythmiquement précise, se déploie sur des mélodies courtes et ciselées. Les influences revendiquées par l’artiste vont de Miriam Makeba à Major Lazer, tandis que la rumba congolaise et les percussions africaines infusent la couleur rythmique de l’ensemble. L’accueil commercial de Zanaka est exceptionnel. Certifié disque d’or en France dès février 2016 (50 000 ventes), puis double platine, triple platine et finalement disque de diamant en décembre 2018 (500 000 équivalents-ventes SNEP), l’album atteint la cinquième place du classement des albums français. Il obtient également une certification or au Canada, platine en Pologne et or en Suisse. Le single « Come » se classe numéro un des ventes en France et est certifié diamant en novembre 2016 ; « Makeba » atteint la septième place du classement français. Aux Victoires de la Musique 2016, Jain est nommée dans la catégorie Album Révélation ; en février 2017, elle remporte la Victoire de l’Artiste Féminine de l’Année. Le clip de « Makeba », tourné en Afrique du Sud, est nommé au Grammy Award du meilleur clip musical en 2018. L’album est sorti aux États-Unis et au Royaume-Uni en octobre 2016, et Jain effectue une tournée internationale incluant Montréal, New York et Los Angeles. Une édition deluxe augmentée de six titres, dont le single « Dynabeat », paraît le 25 novembre 2016.

Released on November 6, 2015, through the independent label Spookland and distributed by Sony Music / Columbia, Zanaka is the debut studio album by Jeanne Galice, known as Jain, a French singer-songwriter born on February 7, 1992, in Toulouse. The title means « child » in Malagasy and is a tribute to her Franco-Malagasy mother. Across ten English-language tracks, this electro-pop album with deep world music roots maps a cosmopolitan universe shaped by the artist’s African and Middle Eastern expatriation years, and established itself in France and internationally as a major pop revelation of 2015–2016. Jain spent her childhood following her father’s postings in the oil industry, living in Dubai, Pointe-Noire (Republic of the Congo), and Abu Dhabi. It was in Pointe-Noire that she first learned music production using Fruity Loops software, under the guidance of a local producer known as Mr. Flash, and began composing her earliest demos, steeped in Congolese rumba and African music traditions. Back in France studying art in Paris, she posted her demos on MySpace, where they were discovered by singer-producer Maxim Nucci, aka Yodelice. He took her under his wing, became her producer, and had her open on his tour as well as Christine and the Queens’. In 2013, the two artists performed « Redemption Song » together on the television programme Taratata. Yodelice produced and recorded the entire album at Spookland Studio in Paris. The lead single « Come » was released on May 11, 2015, preceded by the Hope EP (June 2015), which also contained « Makeba. » The album was mastered by Herb Powers at PM Studios in Orlando, Florida. Zanaka sits at the intersection of several genres that resist easy labelling: electro-pop, reggae, world music, folk, and hip-hop elements cross paths from track to track. Yodelice’s productions combine dense rhythmic programming, processed samples — including a loop from Hamilton Bohannon’s 1978 track « Me and the Gang » at the core of « Makeba » — and arrangements featuring brass (Adrien Hurtebize on trombone across several tracks). Jain’s luminous, rhythmically precise voice moves through short, tightly crafted melodies. Her stated influences range from Miriam Makeba to Major Lazer, while Congolese rumba and African percussion run as a persistent rhythmic undercurrent throughout the record. Zanaka’s commercial performance was exceptional. It was certified gold in France in February 2016 (50,000 sales), climbing through double and triple platinum to a diamond certification in December 2018 (500,000 SNEP equivalent sales), peaking at number five on the French albums chart. It was also certified gold in Canada, platinum in Poland, and gold in Switzerland. The single « Come » reached number one on the French singles chart and was certified diamond in November 2016; « Makeba » peaked at number seven in France. At the 2016 Victoires de la Musique, Jain was nominated in the Révélation Album category; in February 2017, she won the prize for Female Artist of the Year. The music video for « Makeba, » filmed in South Africa, was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Music Video at the 60th Grammy Awards in 2018. The album was released in the United States and United Kingdom in October 2016, accompanied by an international tour taking in Montreal, New York, and Los Angeles. A deluxe edition featuring six additional tracks, including the single « Dynabeat, » followed on November 25, 2016.
