Gorillaz est l’album éponyme du groupe virtuel britannique Gorillaz, sorti le 26 mars 2001 chez Parlophone au Royaume-Uni et le 19 juin 2001 chez Virgin aux États-Unis. Conçu par Damon Albarn (Blur) et l’illustrateur Jamie Hewlett, ce premier disque marque une rupture avec le britpop pour explorer un territoire éclectique mêlant trip hop, dub, hip-hop et influences latines. Porté par le succès du single « Clint Eastwood », l’album installe d’emblée l’identité sonore et visuelle qui définira Gorillaz.

Enregistré entre 1998 et 2000, Gorillaz déploie un univers musical hétéroclite où se croisent trip hop, dub, punk rock et sonorités latines. L’album introduit les quatre personnages animés du groupe et s’appuie sur une série de collaborations avec des artistes invités venus d’horizons variés. Les morceaux alternent ambiances mélancoliques, expérimentations électroniques et éclats rock plus abrasifs, sans jamais se fixer durablement sur un seul genre. Le disque installe ainsi une tonalité à la fois ludique et légèrement désabusée, reflet d’un projet pensé comme une réponse ironique à la culture des écrans et à l’industrie musicale de l’époque.

L’album a été enregistré au Studio 13 de Damon Albarn à Londres ainsi qu’aux Geejam Studios en Jamaïque, entre 1998 et 2000, sous la production de Dan the Automator, épaulé par le groupe lui-même, Tom Girling et Jason Cox. Le projet Gorillaz est né d’une conversation entre Albarn et Hewlett, qui partageaient un appartement à Londres et souhaitaient créer un « groupe de dessin animé » en réaction à ce qu’ils percevaient comme la vacuité de MTV. L’EP Tomorrow Comes Today (2000) a précédé l’album et en contenait déjà trois titres. Les sessions jamaïcaines ont notamment permis l’enregistrement de la voix d’Ibrahim Ferrer sur « Latin Simone », tandis que Del the Funky Homosapien a rejoint le projet tardivement, alors que l’album était quasiment terminé, pour poser ses vers sur « Clint Eastwood » et « Rock the House ».

L’album a reçu un accueil critique globalement positif, avec un score agrégé de 71/100 sur Metacritic. Il a figuré dans les classements de fin d’année de Spin, Q et NME, et a été nominé pour le Mercury Music Prize 2001, nomination retirée à la demande du groupe. Porté par le succès de « Clint Eastwood », l’album s’est vendu à plus de sept millions d’exemplaires dans le monde, certifié triple platine au Royaume-Uni et platine aux États-Unis, valant au groupe une entrée au Guinness des records comme « groupe virtuel le plus performant ». Plusieurs rétrospectives l’ont depuis classé parmi les meilleurs albums des années 2000, et il figure dans l’ouvrage 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

The Gorillaz project originated from a conversation between Albarn and Hewlett, who were sharing a London flat and wanted to create a « cartoon band » in response to what they saw as the emptiness of MTV. The Tomorrow Comes Today EP (2000) preceded the album and already featured three of its tracks. The Jamaica sessions notably produced Ibrahim Ferrer’s vocals on « Latin Simone », while Del the Funky Homosapien joined the project late, once the album was nearly finished, to record his verses for « Clint Eastwood » and « Rock the House ».

The album received generally positive reviews, holding a Metacritic score of 71/100. It appeared on year-end lists from Spin, Q and NME, and was nominated for the 2001 Mercury Music Prize, a nomination later withdrawn at the band’s request. Driven by the success of « Clint Eastwood », the album went on to sell over seven million copies worldwide, achieving triple-platinum certification in the UK and platinum status in the US, and earning the band a Guinness World Records entry as the « most successful virtual band ». Several retrospectives have since ranked it among the best albums of the 2000s, and it is featured in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
