Dj Mehdi – Lucky Boy (2006)

Lucky Boy est le deuxième album studio de DJ Mehdi, sorti le 30 octobre 2006 chez Ed Banger Records, sous licence exclusive de Because Music. Réalisé par le producteur français d’origine tunisienne à un moment charnière de sa carrière, ce disque marque son passage du hip-hop vers l’électro et la house, dans le sillage du label parisien fondé par Pedro Winter. Entre samples funk, breaks hip-hop et sonorités électro, Lucky Boy installe une identité mêlant héritage rap et scène French Touch.

Lucky Boy déploie un univers sonore hybride, à la croisée du hip-hop instrumental, de l’électro et de la house filtrée, porté par des breaks percussifs et des basses saturées héritées de la culture club parisienne du milieu des années 2000. L’album alterne morceaux dansants et pistes plus atmosphériques, sans discours narratif explicite, mais avec une cohérence assumée autour de la fête, du collectif et de l’énergie de studio. Plusieurs titres convoquent des réminiscences hip-hop des années 1980 tout en s’inscrivant pleinement dans l’esthétique électro naissante du label Ed Banger, entre légèreté assumée et productions abrasives.

DJ Mehdi, déjà connu pour son parcours dans le rap français au sein d’Idéal J puis comme producteur pour MC Solaar et 113, avait rejoint Ed Banger Records en 2003 à l’invitation de Pedro Winter. Après une première incursion électronique remarquée, Lucky Boy constitue le premier album complet du label, conçu comme un pari commercial et artistique pour asseoir Ed Banger sur le format album plutôt que sur les seuls singles. Le disque réunit plusieurs collaborateurs de l’écurie parisienne, notamment Feadz sur « Pony Rocking » et le duo canadien Chromeo sur « I Am Somebody », dans une ambiance de travail collectif revendiquée par Mehdi. La pochette et l’identité visuelle du titre « Lucky Boy » associent également Fafi, graffeuse et épouse de l’artiste à l’époque.

L’accueil critique de Lucky Boy a été contrasté : Pitchfork et NME lui ont réservé un accueil plutôt favorable, tandis que Resident Advisor s’est montré plus réservé, jugeant l’ensemble inégal malgré des moments réussis. L’album a néanmoins été salué a posteriori comme un jalon important de l’histoire d’Ed Banger, consolidant la crédibilité du label avant l’explosion internationale de Justice l’année suivante. Plusieurs rééditions et remix ont suivi, dont le disque de remixes Lucky Boy at Night (2007), signé notamment par Kenny Dope et Switch. L’album reste aujourd’hui considéré comme l’un des disques marquants du courant électro-hip-hop français des années 2000.

DJ Mehdi, already known for his career in French rap with Idéal J and as a producer for MC Solaar and 113, had joined Ed Banger Records in 2003 at Pedro Winter’s invitation. Following an earlier notable venture into electronic music, Lucky Boy became the label’s first full-length album, conceived as both a commercial and artistic bet to establish Ed Banger on the album format rather than singles alone. The record brings together several collaborators from the Parisian roster, notably Feadz on « Pony Rocking » and the Canadian duo Chromeo on « I Am Somebody », within a collective studio atmosphere Mehdi openly embraced.
