Ce signal parvient à Marissa Wiegler, une agente de la CIA, qui envoie une équipe capturer la jeune fille et l’emmener dans un lieu tenu secret au Maroc. S’ensuit une traque à travers plusieurs pays, mêlant scènes d’action et révélations progressives sur les véritables origines d’Hanna et les raisons de l’inimitié entre Erik et Marissa.
Le projet est initialement envisagé avec Danny Boyle puis Alfonso Cuarón à la réalisation, avant que Joe Wright ne soit choisi, sur suggestion de Saoirse Ronan elle-même auprès des producteurs.
