Dixième album studio d’Anthrax, The Greater of Two Evils paraît le 23 novembre 2004 chez Sanctuary Records.
Anthrax’s tenth studio album, The Greater of Two Evils, was released on November 23, 2004, through Sanctuary Records. Rather than a collection of new material, it gathers fourteen band classics originally sung by Neil Turbin or Joey Belladonna between 1984 and 1990, re-recorded by the band’s then-current lineup fronted by vocalist John Bush. The cover, entrusted to American artist Shepard Fairey, known for his Obey graphics inspired by Andre the Giant, marked a clear visual break from the band’s previous painted covers. Chosen by the fans themselves, the project roots The Greater of Two Evils in an approach that is both commemorative and participatory.
The Greater of Two Evils’s concept originated from a vote held on the band’s official website, inviting fans to select tracks from Anthrax’s first five albums — Fistful of Metal, Spreading the Disease, Among the Living, State of Euphoria and Persistence of Time — that they wanted to hear reinterpreted by John Bush, who had by then fronted the band for around a decade. The fourteen chosen songs were recorded in two days at Avatar Studios in New York in January 2004, in a deliberately direct, studio-« live » approach. For the visual identity, drummer and the band’s art director Charlie Benante, who had previously worked with painter Alex Ross on the group’s two prior releases, opted this time for Shepard Fairey to bring a different aesthetic. Liner notes were written by comedian and self-declared band fan Brian Posehn.
Musically, The Greater of Two Evils doesn’t attempt to reinvent the songs but rather to deliver them with more contemporary production and Bush’s deeper vocal grain in place of Turbin’s and Belladonna’s higher registers; only « Deathrider » undergoes a notable rhythmic reworking, with half-time passages absent from the original. Visually, Shepard Fairey applies his signature propaganda-inspired vocabulary of flat colors and stylized motifs to the cover, a departure from the more classically figurative illustrations of his predecessors on the band’s artwork, while retaining the instant readability suited to merchandising and tour branding.
The Greater of Two Evils received a mixed critical response, with some observers praising the raw energy of the exercise and the fit of Bush’s voice on this material, while others found the endeavor unnecessary next to the originals. The album failed to chart in the United States, selling roughly 3,421 copies in its first week, while entering the UK rock and metal chart. It remains the last full studio album recorded with John Bush on vocals before the return of Joey Belladonna and guitarist Dan Spitz to the band. Several of the re-recorded tracks, notably « Among the Living » and « Caught in a Mosh, » later found renewed exposure through music video games and film trailers.
